Carbon Slip and Diamond-Like Coatings

The need to use a cost effective coating with high abrasion resistance, low friction and high surface quality is obvious in an industry which continually strives to find an edge over its nearest competitors. Carbon Slip and Diamond-Like coatings are just such products which can significantly reduce friction and free up a part of the engine renowned for being a major contributor of the total friction produced by any 4 stroke machine.
The valve train is responsible for 20% of the total friction in any engine which in itself is 10% of the total potential power produced. This effectively means that power can be increased by up to 2% by eliminating friction at the tappets.
Cam followers treated with Carbon Slip or Diamond-Like will have a very low friction co-efficient, reducing that all important sliding friction generated at the junction between cam and follower by up to 80%. This can help shorten running-in times and even fuel efficiency is improved. Carbon slip and Diamond-Like will even protect cam and follower where sudden loss of lubricant is an issue. The coatings improve the frictional and wear qualities under all conditions of lubrication: hydrodynamic lubrication, mixed friction and even dry running.

Carbon Slip is an amorphous metal carbon coating. Tungsten carbide rich and carbon rich phases alternate in layers a few atoms thick, resulting in good running-in and burnishing with reduced sliding load.
advantages:
Good wear resistance.
High load-bearing capacity even in dry or lubricant-starved contact.
Low coefficient of friction.

Diamond-Like is a pure carbon coating and is even harder and more wear resistant. Diamond-Like coatings make it
possible to apply contact pressures that would quickly lead to seizure or cold welding under ordinary service conditions. It can cope with higher sliding speeds and has the same very low friction co-efficient.
advantages:
Better wear resistance.
High load-bearing capacity even in dry or lubricant-starved contact.
Very low coefficient of friction.
Higher sliding speeds and pressure.

If you are in any way unsure as to which coating would suit your particular application best, we will be happy to advise.
